The first draft of this article was jotted down during a weather-helped walk around throughout Wespelaar Arboretum in October 2014. It was my last day of a fortnight work experience at the well-known Belgian arboretum, which famously displays comprehensive collections of Rhododendron, Acer, Stewartia, Euonymus among others (however, because of the time of the year, my abiding memory goes to the glow of the magnolias).
On that day the Arboretum hosted a seminar on the lepidote rhododendrons (i.e. those having minute scales on the leaves). The following impressions recount the last few hours of that study day, when the attending group left the lecture room and went out in the fields to observe and recognize the Rhododendron species of the Arboretum and the linked gardens of Herkenrode.

La bozza di questo articolo fu scritta durante una passeggiata per Wespelaar Arboretum nell’ottobre 2014. La sera di quel giorno avrei lasciato il Belgio dopo due settimane di esperienza lavorativa nel famoso arboreto, che fra le altre cose ospita notevoli collezioni di Rhododendron, Acer, Stewartia e Euonymus (…ma la mia memoria ora va al bagliore delle magnolie in fiore).
In quel giorno l’Arboreto ospitò un seminario di studio su rododendri lepidoti. Le impressioni che seguono raccontano delle ultime ore di quel seminario, quando il gruppo lasciò l’edificio e uscì nei prati dell’Arboreto e annessi giardini di Herkenrode per ammirare dal vivo le diverse specie.
