Each year the Cambridge University Botanic Garden welcomes seven trainees into its Certificate in Practical Horticulture and Plantsmanship. In September 2014, I was one of the lucky few. In the twelve following months my fellow trainees and I worked along with all the seven horticultural sections, took part in practical and theoretical lectures, visited gardens and botanically-relevant sites, crammed for the plants identification tests and compiled two academic essays.
What a wonderful feast of plants that was! What more could one ask from one year of horticulture? Perhaps to know by heart all the 8000 different species hosted in the Botanical Garden?

Ogni anno i Giardini Botanici dell’Università di Cambridge accolgono sette tirocinanti per il conseguimento del certificato in orticultura pratica e plantsmanship (che peccato che nella lingua italiana questa parola non abbia un corrispettivo). Nel settembre 2014, io ero tra i fortunati ad iniziare. Nei dodici mesi che seguirono i miei colleghi ed io lavorammo con tutti i sette gruppi orticulturali, visitammo giardini e siti d’interesse botanico, partecipammo a lezioni pratiche e teoriche, studiammo per i tests di identificazione delle piante e compilammo due saggi accademici.
Che magnifica abbuffata di piante! Cosa chiedere di più? Magari poter ricordare a memoria tutte le diverse 8000 specie del Giardino Botanico?
