Project for a coastal garden in Sabaudia (Rome)

In the summer of 2011 I worked for a landscape company in Rome. In my spare time I travelled the region, immersing myself in its warm, subtropical colours and gardens. I used to sojourn to the seaside town of Sabaudia, where – combining business with pleasure – was assigned the design project of a one-hectare private garden.
The site was absolutely magnificent, with sweeping vistas out on Lake Sabaudia and Mount Circeo; the vegetation, naturally lush and generous, presented almost endless opportunities for planting and design. My objective laid in consolidating the steep, sandy banks and concurrently creating distinct terraces and “garden rooms” running from the hilltop to the lake bank. This was achieved by attentive ground levelling, as well as using traditional hedgework and vernacular stonewalls.
